Three children and a teacher were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, before a community member fatally shot the suspected attacker, according to police.
The children killed at Silver Rail Elementary School were ages 5, 8 and 11. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.
Police identified the suspected gunman as a 16-year-old boy from Bend but had not publicly established his motive or whether he had any connection to the school. The investigation remained ongoing Friday.
How the Oregon School Shooting Unfolded
The first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m. Pacific time Thursday, when a person reported that someone was shooting into a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary School, according to an official Bend Police Department incident report.
Within the following minute, Deschutes County emergency dispatchers received additional 911 calls reporting that an armed individual had entered the school and begun shooting.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager fired at locked doors to force his way into the building. Authorities described the firearm involved as a long gun, although they had not publicly confirmed its exact type.
According to police, a community member who witnessed the developing attack pursued the suspect into the school and shot him. Officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m. and reported shortly afterward that the suspected attacker was dead.
The distinction between the intervention and the police response is significant: authorities said the community member stopped the suspected attacker before responding officers reached him.
Reuters reported that Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the intervention and acknowledged the emotional burden carried by the person involved.
Police established a location for families to reunite with students at Journey Church as emergency personnel secured the area and searched the school.
What Police Have Confirmed About the Suspect
Authorities described the suspected attacker as a 16-year-old local resident. His identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports reviewed Friday.
Investigators had not established a motive, explained how the teenager obtained the firearm, or confirmed whether he was a current or former student at Silver Rail Elementary School.
The available evidence also does not establish whether particular security measures failed. Police said the attacker fired at locked doors, but the circumstances surrounding his entry remained part of the investigation.
The identity and relationship to the school of the community member who shot the suspect had likewise not been officially confirmed. Early emergency communications raised the possibility that the person was a student's parent, but that detail should not be treated as an established finding.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies were assisting local authorities as investigators worked to reconstruct the attack and determine its circumstances.
Bend Community Mourns as Schools Close
The attack devastated the school community in Bend, a central Oregon city of approximately 100,000 residents. Silver Rail Elementary serves roughly 450 students and has more than 40 adult staff members.
Hundreds of people gathered Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil at Drake Park, where residents offered prayers, shared songs and remembered the victims.
Flowers, candles and messages of remembrance reflected the shock experienced by families and school staff. Oregon Public Broadcasting documented the community's response as residents gathered in the hours following the shooting.
Steven Cook, the district's top administrative official, expressed the school community's grief during remarks to reporters. Bend-La Pine Schools canceled classes for Friday, October 16, as families, students and employees confronted the aftermath.
Teachers and students had faced frightening uncertainty during the emergency. Accounts reported by local and national journalists described staff attempting to protect and reassure children while the school was under lockdown.
The tragedy also renewed broader concerns about violence at American schools. However, comparisons with other incidents require care because circumstances, investigative findings and school-shooting statistics vary considerably.
Questions Investigators Have Yet to Answer
Several important questions remained unresolved Friday, including why the teenager targeted the school, how he obtained the weapon and whether he had any prior relationship with the institution.
Authorities also needed to establish the complete sequence of events inside the building and clarify the circumstances surrounding the community member's intervention.
The conditions of the two hospitalized survivors were another major concern. Both had initially been reported in critical condition, but no independently verified improvement or deterioration was established in the reports reviewed for this article.
As BBC News reported, investigators had not publicly provided answers to several of the central questions surrounding the attack.
Additional police briefings, medical updates and school district announcements may change the understanding of what happened. Until those findings are confirmed, the reasons behind the violence and the exact circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
