At least eight individuals have lost their lives and over 30 have been injured throughout Ukraine due to overnight missile and drone attacks from Russia, as stated by regional authorities.
Four fatalities were recorded in the Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine. Additionally, three more deaths were reported in the Kyiv region, and one in the southern city of Mykolaiv.
This attack follows one of the most intense bombardments Kyiv has faced since the onset of the Russian invasion just one day prior.
The Russian defense ministry announced that its air defense units managed to shoot down or intercept 95 Ukrainian drones across several regions in Russia, including Moscow, during a four-hour timeframe on Saturday night. There were no reports of casualties.
The drone strike resulted in a temporary halt of all flights at airports in Moscow.
In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin commenced a comprehensive invasion of Ukraine, and presently, Moscow holds approximately 20% of Ukrainian land.
This area encompasses Crimea, the southern peninsula of Ukraine that was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Kyiv's regional leader Mykola Kalashnyk reported that three individuals lost their lives and ten others sustained injuries.
He shared pictures on social media showing several homes engulfed in flames following the Russian bombardments.
In the capital, Kyiv, local authorities indicated that there were 11 injuries, along with numerous fires and damage to residential structures, including a dormitory.
Many individuals were observed taking refuge in the underground metro stations. This incident coincides with the city's annual Kyiv Day celebrations on Sunday.
In Mykolaiv, Ukraine's state emergencies service DSNS stated that the remains of an elderly man were retrieved from a five-story residential building struck by a drone. Additionally, five other individuals were hurt.
In Kharkiv, regional officials reported three people injured.
Meanwhile, in Russia, the defense ministry announced that Ukrainian drones targeted eight regions.
"From 20:00 Moscow time (17:00 GMT) on May 24 to 00:00 on May 25, air defense forces successfully destroyed and intercepted 95 unmanned aerial vehicles of Ukrainian origin," the ministry said in its statement.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin mentioned that 12 drones approaching the city were shot down.
He further noted that emergency response teams were dispatched to evaluate the damage caused by debris from the downed drones.
